Made famous by the three pyramids of Khufu, Khafra and Menkaura, as well as by the Sphinx, the town was a witness to the ancient Egyptian civilisation. Its monuments make it Egypt’s most visited town.
It was from the foot of these pyramids that Napoleon Bonaparte, during the Egyptian campaign on 21st July 1798, before a decisive battle, proclaimed the famous « Soldiers, from the top of these pyramids, 40 centuries of history are looking down upon us. »
Classed by the Greeks amongst the seven wonders of the world, the pyramid of Khufu remains a challenge to the imagination and High point of the this Egyptian journey.
Today, is a provincial administrative centre of some 2 million inhabitants and is now part of the huge Cairo metropolis as well as being a mecca for tourists in Egypt.
