???. All that remains of the one in Memphis are two giant Ramesses, an alabaster sphinx and an enormous palm grove planted for the sweetness of its dates. However, on the edge of the desert, on the sorry and arid plateau that dominates the fertile valley, rises the ancestor of Egypt’s pyramids. Constructed in the year 2800 BC by Imhotep the architect, chancellor to the pharaoh Djoser, it is believed to be the oldest large stone edifice of humanity. Here too, the elements, man and sand have all taken their toll on the site. Archaeologists have created miracles, digging, probing endlessly and discovering each time new treasures.
In 1851, Auguste Mariette uncovered the Serapeum, an underground sepulture dedicated to the God Apis.
In the 1990s, Alain Zivie stumbled upon the fabulous necropolis of cats, home to thousands of mollified felines, several millennia old. All while this was happening, Jean-Philippe Lauer gave his life to this unique site, putting back up the fibrous columns of the hypostyle room, finding the oldest life size Egyptian statue (that of Djoser) and elsewhere unearthing bas-reliefs of the most stunning beauty. The site stretches for around five miles and includes pyramids of Pepi I, Pepi II, Teti and Merenre.
