Goddess taking the shape of a woman with a lioness’ head and having the solar disc as headgear, her principal sanctuary is Memphis where she is considered as the wife of Ptah and the mother of Nefertem. Amongst the many lioness Goddesses (Bastet, Wadjet), Sekhmet ‘the powerful’ or ‘the burning flame’ is the one with the worst character and the most dreadful temper. Her messengers, the arrows from her bow and fire-breath all spread epidemics, disease and death. She did however have the power to heal which made her the Goddess of magicians and the protector of doctors. This true warrior personified the ravages of the sun and was the instrument of anger of her father Ra. On one occasion, she nearly exterminated the entire human race. Having become too dangerous, Ra finally decided to intoxicate her in order to pacify her anger. It is thus that Sekhmet the terrible made way for Hathor, the Goddess of joy and of the sky.
