Worshipped in Kom Ombo and in the Faiyum region, Sobek is represented in the form of a man with the head of a crocodile or simply as a crocodile. Son of the Goddess Neith, he is the God of water and fertility, and it lies with him to announce the rising and falling of the Nile’s waters. When crocodiles populated the banks, this was a sign that there would be substantial flooding and therefore a prosperous harvest.
From the Middle Kingdom onwards, Sobek is assimilated into the sun God Ra. Largely due to his prehistoric nature, towards the end of the first millennium, Sobek the crocodile became a God creator of the world, like Ra.
